Belu is helping reduce single-use water bottles by enabling restaurants to bottle their own high quality still & sparkling filtered water on site in reusable bottles – a solution that dramatically lowers their carbon footprint. Aside from ethical sourcing, Treehouse advocates sustainable waste management, and encourages customers to return any packaging – which they then recycle into compost for local Hong Kong farmers and growers.

Over the last 12 months, HKUST has worked closely with their F&B tenants to encourage detailed data gathering to understand the food waste situation on campus. They’ve also created a compulsory waste separation and recycling programme – this is an important part of the tendering process for new F&B tenants.

Circular City introduced HK to their trailblazing pilot project, Choose: Reuse. 

In just six weeks over this summer they trialled a coffee reuse system that saved 1000 cups from landfill. They captured valuable insights needed to upgrade and perfect their service – the goal of which is to minimize plastic takeaway waste in local F&B outlets by using smart technology.

Our winner is: Kisum Chan

from Paddi 

Kisum Chan is the co-founder of Paddi, a rice social enterprise for which he won the HULT prize of US$1 million while studying at UCL. 

Paddi was created to empower Southeast Asian rice farmers through making farming more efficient and improving yields – both saving rice from going to landfill and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from food waste, as well as alleviating poverty. 

Paddi has pledged to reinvest 20% of its profits into sustainable initiatives – giving farmers better equipment to grow better food.
